HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - University of Cincinnati junior David Tepe (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) shot a 2-over par 71-73=144 on Monday to tie for 37th place after two rounds at the Marshall Invitational at the Guyan Golf and Country Club.
Final-round play begins Tuesday at 8 a.m.
Tepe ended the first day one shot ahead of teammates junior Andrew Desmara (Union, Ky./Ryle) and freshman Jared Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) who each carded a 3-over par 145 score, tying for 47th place. Desmarais rebounded from his first-round 4-over par 75 with the Bearcats' top single-round score of the day, a 1-under 70 in the second round. Howard coupled a first-round 1-over 72 with a second round 2-over 73.
Other UC players competing were junior Zach Bates (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/ Kenston), who is tied for 76th place after an 80-72=152, and sophomore Spencer Mellon (Oakmont, Pa./Central Catholic), who is in 87th place after an 82-85=167.
Richmond's Daniel Walker leads all competitors following his 10-under par 66-66=132.
Virginia Commonwealth leads the 15-team field at 13-under par (277-278=555). UC is in 14th place at 18-over par (298-288=586).
"For our first event, we have some things to build on," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "We know we must get better if we want to compete at the level of our competition. We have played too many rounds in the past where someone is out of the round early. We hope to have five guys in the round tomorrow."
