Coach Dayes Postgame Interview
CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team dropped a 2-1, double-overtime decision against Oakland on Sunday afternoon in Gettler Stadium.
The match appeared to be in hand for the Bearcats (3-4-0), who held a 1-0 lead late in the contest, but an Oakland (1-5-1) goal with 20 seconds remaining in regulation tied things up and the Golden Grizzlies eventually won in double overtime.
The Bearcats controlled the match through the first 80-plus minutes, including holding a 13-2 lead in shots at the half. The squads were scoreless into the 66th minute despite the advantage in shots and chances for the Bearcats. UC finally broke through when Shamar Shelton (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George's) slid a through ball into the box and on to the foot of freshman Will Diebold (Coppell, Texas/Jesuit College Prep). Diebold slotted a left-footed shot to the far post for his first career goal and a 1-0 lead for the Bearcats.
Pushing forward late in the match, OU earned a throw-in deep in Cincinnati territory. The throw came into the UC box, where it was knocked down by goalkeeper Joey Barnard (McKinney, Texas/McKinney), but Jeff Cheslik was there to put it in, tying things at 1-1 with 20 seconds left in regulation.
With momentum swinging in favor of Oakland, the Grizzlies got the win on another set piece. OU earned a free kick 25 yards from goal. Jonathan Evans curled in the free kick and Konnor McNamara headed in the game winner for Oakland.
UC finished with a 23-14 advantage in shots and 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bearcats will open BIG EAST play on Saturday at Providence.
