Dublin, Ohio -The University of Cincinnati Tennis team had a respectable outing on its final two days at the Muirfield Invitational hosted by Ohio State. The team had representatives as high as the Quarterfinals of the Singles and Doubles Main Draws. The Bearcats also captured consolation wins at the tournament.
The team of junior Safiyya Ismail and sophomore Jasmine Lee lost in the quarterfinals of the Main Draw 8-2 to Shine/Fellerhoff of University of Louisville. The two went on to the Quarterfinal Doubles Consolation Bracket and lost their first match to Stiles/McGraw from University of Kentucky 8-2.
The other doubles team of freshman Ashleigh Witte and sophomore newcomer Sierra Sullivan lost their first round match to Main Draw finalists Westerink/Mebuke of Eastern Michigan University. They went to the First Round Consolation Doubles Bracket where they defeated Johnson/Rodriguez of Ball State University the first match 8-0. They then defeated de-Lisle-Tarr/Rivero from EMU 8-2 in the second match to capture the consolation win.
On the singles side of competition, Sullivan went to the First-Round Consolation Bracket after losing her first match in the Main Draw. She beat Peresetsky from Wright State University 6-2, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of this bracket. Sullivan lost the quarterfinal match of the First-Round Consolation Bracket to Westerink of EMU 6-3, 6-3.
Witte went all the way to the quarterfinals of the Main Draw by winning her first match of the tournament and then going on to the second round to defeat McGraw of UK 6-4, 3-6, 1-0. This win put her in the quarterfinals of the Main Draw. She lost to finalist Harutyunyan of the University of Akron 6-2, 6-0. Witte earned a spot in the Quarterfinal Consolation Bracket, where she lost the first match to Morin of UK 6-4, 6-4.
Ismail won her first match of the Main Draw on the first day as well. She then went on to defeat Toncheva of EMU 6-2, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals of the Singles Main Draw. She lost that match to Pantusart of UA 6-0, 6-1. She joined Witte in the Quarterfinal Consolation Bracket, where she too lost her first match to Dittmer of OSU 6-3, 6-1.
Lee won her first match in the tournament and moved on to the second round of the Main Singles Draw. She lost to Dittmer of OSU 6-3, 2-6, 1-0. She then went on to the Second-Round Consolation Singles Bracket and lost the first match to Shkundina of UA 6-0, 6-1.
The Bearcats will be in action again this weekend when they travel up to Oxford for the Miami (OH) Invitational. Play will start on Friday, September 23.
