MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The combination of sophomore forward Jazmine Rhodes (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach) and freshman forward Mackenzie Grause (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Highlands) led the University of Cincinnati women's soccer team to a 3-2 double-overtime win over College of Charleston Friday night at Patriots Point Athletics Complex in the opening round of the College of Charleston Cup.
In the 102nd minute Grause took a shot from the left side of the box that deflected toward Rhodes, who promptly struck the ball into the net to secure the victory for Cincinnati (3-2-2).
Cincinnati out-shot Charleston 20-16 for the match and took six corner kicks compared to CofC's two. Friday marked the sixth time in seven matches UC outshot its opponent.
Rhodes finished the match with two goals and one assist, while Grause ended the night with a goal and an assist. The duo nearly secured the win in regulation.
The Bearcats led 2-1 late in the second half, but were unable to protect the lead in the closing moments. In the 83rd minute, CofC freshman forward Francesca Kentimenos scored off a free kick from the top of the box to knot the score 2-2.
With the score tied 1-1, Cincinnati gained the lead in the 77th minute when Grause led Rhodes on a breakaway opportunity on the left side of the box. Rhodes slipped the ball past a charging CofC GK Taylor Avery to give the Bearcats a 2-1 lead.
Charleston switched goalkeepers in the second half. Freshman GK Taylor Avery entered the match at the beginning of the second stanza after senior Cricket Wise got the start.
The Bearcats and Cougars went into halftime tied at 1-1. After the first 45 minutes, Cincinnati out-shot Charleston 8-7, including a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Additionally, the Bearcats took three corner kicks in the first, while the Cougars had none.
Facing a 1-0 deficit in the first half, the Bearcats evened the score after Rhodes threw the ball in toward Grause, who promptly nailed a shot into the back of the net in the 27th minute. The match-tying score was the second goal of the season for Grause.
Cincinnati initially fell behind in the 17th minute when CofC senior midfielder Hope Atkinson took a serve from freshman midfielder Sarah Cardamone and quickly got the shot past a charging Kristina Utley (Castro Valley, Calif./Castro Valley) near the top of the box, putting Charleston ahead 1-0.
Cincinnati will play Coastal Carolina University, which earlier Friday lost to Old Dominion University 2-0, at noon Sunday at Patriots Point Athletics Complex on the final day of the College of Charleston Cup.
