QUEENS, N.Y. - The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team dropped a 63-34 decision at No. 22 St. John's on Tuesday (Jan. 18) afternoon.
Kayla Cook (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster) and Jeanise Randolph (Calumet City, Ill./Thornton Fractional North) scored eight points each to lead the Bearcats (8-9, 1-4 BIG EAST).
The Bearcats struggled early, turning the ball over on each of the first three possessions and St. John's jumped out to an 11-3 lead just under seven minutes into the contest. UC scored the next seven points, capped by Shelly Bellman's (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorf) second three, to make it 11-10 with 9:28 to go in the stanza.
The Red Storm took control from there, outscoring the Bearcats 19-1 the rest of the half to take a 30-11 lead into the locker room.
St. John's extended its lead in the second half, pushing the advantage to as much as 32.
The Bearcats committed 18 turnovers and shot just 27 percent from the floor in dropping their third straight game.
Shareese Ulis (Toledo, Ohio/Trinity Valley C.C.), who entered the contest as the seventh-leading scorer in the BIG EAST at 15.8 points per game, scored just three on 1-of-8 shooting.
St. John's won the rebounding battle, 37-38, and scored 16 second-chance points, 28 points in the paint and turned the 18 UC turnovers into 20 points.
The Bearcats defeated St. John's, 70-60, last season in Fifth Third Arena, giving Jamelle Elliott her first BIG EAST win as UC's head coach.
The Bearcats continue a two-game road swing with a trip to Louisville on Saturday, Jan. 22, to take on the rival Cardinals at 2 p.m. in the KFC Yum! Center.
