CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team dropped its final non-conference game of the season, 65-56, against local rival Miami (OH) on Sunday (Jan. 2) in Fifth Third Arena.
Chanel Chisholm (Long Island, N.Y./Vanderbilt) scored a career-high 20 points on a career-best 10-of-13 shooting and freshman Jeanise Randolph (Calumet City, Ill./Thornton Fractional North) continued her strong play of late with a career-high 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
The rest of the Bearcats (7-6, 0-1 BIG EAST) combined to shoot 4-of-41 from the field, and only Shareese Ulis (Toledo, Ohio/Trinity Valley C.C.) and Kayla Cook (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster) hit field goals.
Ulis opened the game with a short jumper to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead, but Miami (8-5) took control from there. The RedHawks' lead fluctuated between three and nine points throughout the first half, but three straight points by UC at the end of the half cut the lead to 32-27 going into the locker room.
Cincinnati scored six of the first eight points of the second half to cut the lead to 34-33 with 18:00 to go, but Miami answered right back and extended the lead back to nine, 46-37, with 11:39 to play.
UC cut it to three, 57-54, on a Randolph bucket with just over four minutes left, but Miami answered with its ninth three-pointer of the night and the RedHawks were able to seal the win from the free throw line, sinking 5-of-6 down the stretch and 16-of-19 for the game.
Maggie Boyer led Miami with 18 points, while Courtney Osborn scored 12 with eight assists. Kirsten Olowinski posted a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 18 rebounds and Rachael Henke scored 10 for the victors.
Ulis joined Chisholm and Randolph in double figures despite shooting just 3-of-18 from the field and 2-of-9 from three-point range.
The Bearcats shot just 32 percent as a team, but were strong again from the free-throw line, knocking down 15-of-18. Over the last five games, the Bearcats are shooting 55-of-68 from the charity stripe, good for 81 percent.
The Bearcats now dive into BIG EAST play, first with a trip to USF on Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Sun Dome.
