CINCINNATI - D.J. Albert (Park City, Ill./College of Lake County) and Matt Remaley (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) scored in the first half to help the University of Cincinati men's soccer team overcome an early 1-0 deficit and UC held on to defeat SIU Edwardsville by a 2-1 count on Tuesday evening in Gettler Stadium.

The win snapped a five-match winless streak for the Bearcats (4-6-1), who were 0-4-1 in the last five outings, scoring only two goals in that span.

The Bearcats put two goals on the board in the first 36 minutes against SIUE (6-2-2), which entered on a four-match unbeaten streak. After the Cougars struck in the 17th minute on Jack Twellman's eighth goal of the campaign, UC bounced right back less than three minutes later.

Shamar Shelton (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George's), who was dangerous all night on the flank, beat his man on the left side and sent a perfectly placed cross onto the head of freshman goalscorer Cole DeNormandie (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional). His redirection was saved by Scott Meyer by the shoetop and went over the endline for a corner. SIUE cleared the corner, but Cincinnati earned a throw-in and Sam Klosterman's (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) long throw made it into the box, where Albert redirected for his second goal of his senior campaign.

UC took advantage of a Cougars mistake in the back to take the lead for good. In the 36th minute, Meyer played the ball short to his defensive backline, but Leon Powell (Kingston, Jamaica/Excelsior) disrupted the play and layed the ball back for Remaley, who beat an exposed Meyer for the game-winner. It was Remaley's second tally of the season.

The Bearcats had the better of the chances throughout the second half and, if not for a couple of sparkling saves from Meyer, would have extended the lead. Shelton saw his left-footed blast saved just over Meyers head and off the crossbar in the 51st minute.

SIUE had one sterling chance late in the match off a corner kick. The Bearcats were able to clear a Twellman shot off the line after it got over the top of keeper Joey Barnard (McKinney, Texas/McKinney). A follow-up shot went wide and the Bearcats escaped with their first win since Sept. 11.

The win was the 90th at Cincinnati for 10th-year head coach Hylton Dayes. He is second in school history behind Bob Muro (114 wins).

The Bearcats will return to conference play with a trip to Rutgers to take on the Scarlet Knights on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 2:30 p.m.
