Freshman setter Caylin Mahoney (Fort Worth, Texas/Keller Central) has earned the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week award after leading Cincinnati to a 3-0 mark against Western Kentucky and sweeps of Pittsburgh and West Virginia.
This is the second honor for Mahoney in her career. She is only the fourth Bearcat volleyball player to earn Freshman of the Week honors more than once in a season. She totaled 118 assists in the three wins, averaging 10.72 per set. Mahoney ran the Bearcat offense, which hit .288 over the course of the weekend. She now totals 897 assists on the season and 10.68 per set. This average puts her second in the BIG EAST for assists, only behind Marquette's setter Chelsea Heier of Marquette who is undefeated in conference.
She also was a force on offense from her setter position with a total of 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage over the course of the matches.
Junior Jordanne Scott (Indianapolis, Ind. /Lawrence North) is also honored this week by being named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll. Scott had a very consistent performance in all three matches. She averaged over four kills per set and a .395 hitting percentage. Scott has moved into the best hitting percentage spot on the team with a .277 mark. She is .002 away from the top ten in the conference.
The Bearcats (7-2, BIG EAST) will take a break from conference play tomorrow night (October 25) against cross-town rival Xavier. Starting at 7:30 p.m., this Dig for a Cure match will bring in donations to the fight against breast cancer. The first 75 fans will receive a pink Adidas bag.
