PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team will make its second trip to western Pennsylvania in the last seven days when it competes in the Pittsburgh Invitational, Friday through Sunday, at Trees Pool.
Cincinnati is coming off a dual meet against Pittsburgh at Trees Pool on Nov. 11 in which the UC men fell to Pitt 237-60 while the Bearcats women were defeated 217-82. The following day, both the UC men and women placed third in a meet vs. West Virginia and Villanova in Morgantown, W.Va.
Participating teams at the Pitt Invitational include Connecticut, Michigan (diving only), Ohio State, Pittsburgh and West Virginia.
The UC women will need continued standout performances from freshman Helena Pikhartova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Jana Nerudy) and senior Liz Hansson (Lund, Sweden/School of St. Petri) in order to keep up with their opponents.
Pikhartova has placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke at all three of Cincinnati's meets this year. She's twice recorded a mark of 1 minute, 3.45 seconds, which ranks second all-time in UC history.
Hansson, the most decorated swimmer on the UC women's roster, has five first-place finishes to her credit in three meets this season.
In the men's division, senior Haywood Miller (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Maryland) is coming off arguably his best meet as a Bearcat in Morgantown. Miller totaled three individual wins in the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes, as well as the 400 individual medley at WVU.
Other notable performers for the UC men are junior Roberto Nevarez (Chihuahua, Mexico/ITESM Chihuahua) and freshman Alex Chin (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington). Nevarez won the 100-yard butterfly at WVU with a mark of 51.76 seconds and came within .50 seconds of winning the same event at Pitt. Chin earned a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke at Pitt with a mark of 1:55.74.
