PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving teams sit in fifth place (women) and fourth place (men) after the first day of competition at the Pittsburgh Invitational at Trees Pool.
The UC women have accumulated 90 points and sit in fifth place out of six teams. They trail first-place and No. 13th-ranked Ohio State University by 303 points so far.
The Cincinnati men have totaled 107 points to sit in fourth out of five teams. University of Pittsburgh, with 350 points, leads the men's division.
UC senior Haywood Miller (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Maryland) recorded a team-best fifth-place showing in the 200-yard individual medley with a mark of 1 minute, 55.33 seconds, which gave the Bearcats 14 points.
Freshman Awse Ma'aya (Amman, Jordan/The Bolles School) placed first (17th overall) in the bonus final round of the 200 IM with a mark of 2:00.30.
In the women's division, the Bearcats 200-yard freestyle relay team of freshman Helena Pikhartova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Jana Nerudy), junior Alicia Berman (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), sophomore Victoria Jacumski (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) and sophomore Sammie Wheeler (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) earned a seventh-place finish after finishing in 1:36.82.
Day 2 of the Pittsburgh Invitational is set to begin Saturday with preliminary rounds at 10 a.m.
