CINCINNATI - The Black team recorded a 5-4 walk-off victory Sunday in the final game of the University of Cincinnati baseball team's Red & Black World Series at Marge Schott Stadium.
With the Black team trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth, freshman catcher David McInerney (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) led off the inning with a double off the left-center field fence. Senior infielder Sam Vandenheuvel (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton/Mesa CC) followed with a bunt single, setting up sophomore outfielder Ronald Cotton's (Florence, Ky./Boone County) walk-off triple in the right-center field gap to win the game and the series for the Black team.
Vandenheuvel and Cotton each finished the game with two hits for the Black team.
Senior left-hander Brad Mergen (Albany, Minn./Albany/Indian Hills CC) got the win for the Black squad, while freshman RHP Art Warren (Stryker, Ohio/Napoleon) threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and struck out two.
Redshirt sophomore LHP Jason Pascuzzi (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) threw 2.1 scoreless innings of relief for the Red team.
The Red team took command earlier in the game after senior first baseman Nic Spence (Victoria, Australia/St. Joseph's/Central Arizona CC) hit a three-run homer.
Sophomore infielder Matt Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian) and junior outfielder Jake Proctor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) each finished with two hits for the Red team.
