CINCINNATI - Twenty members of the University of Cincinnati's women's track team volunteered their time Saturday, November 18, 2011 to the Girls on the Run of Greater Cincinnati. The program is a life-changing, character development program for 3rd - 8th grade girls in the Greater Cincinnati area. Exercise, positive reinforcement, and encouraging role models are used in the program to provide girls with the confidence they need in their critical pre-teen years.
The student-athletes participated in hour-long lessons that combined running and walking games with various life skills, including healthy eating, leadership, setting goals, cooperation and other age-appropriate topics. In addition to discussing life goals and lessons, the student-athletes were able to assist the participants in training for the Girls on the Run 5k .
Ten University of Cincinnati student-athletes, from various Bearcat athletic teams, participated in the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation on Sunday, November 20 at Toys R Us. The student-athletes assisted in `Stuff the Truck,' which involves filling a 7-ton tactical vehicle full of toys along with the help of United States Marines.
The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.
This collaboration between the United States Marines and the University of Cincinnati Bearcats is important in giving each child a little bit of Christmas this year.
