CINCINNATI -The University of Cincinnati volleyball team defeated the University of Miami (OH) 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-12) Saturday evening at Fifth Third Arena to close out the 2011 regular season.
The Bearcats were led in the match by junior Jordanne Scott (Indianapolis, Ind. /Lawrence North) who recorded 11 kills and no errors for a .718 percentage.
Senior Missy Harpenau (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) finished her home career as a Bearcat with nine kills and five digs. Junior Becca Refenes (Westland, Mich. /Lutheran Westland) finished the match with six kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
Sophomore libero Emily MacIntyre (Muncie, Ind. /Yorktown) and junior Karen Onuki (Troy, Ohio/Troy) tied for a match-high 10 digs each. Freshman Caylin Mahoney (Fort Worth, Texas/Keller Central) led the match with 30 assists. She also recorded six kills from her setter position.
The third set started with kills from junior Emily Hayden (Louisville, Ky. /Assumption) and Mahoney and a dig from sophomore Brianna Richey (Tiffin, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) for an 8-5 Bearcat lead. Kills from Harpenau, Mahoney and Hayden and digs from Onuki added to the lead 18-9. Refenes added an ace and Hayden recorded a kill, but junior Megan Turner (Ontario, N.Y. /Wayne Central) ended the match with a kill with a 25-12 third set score.
Mahoney started the second set with an ace, followed by a kill from Refenes for a quick 12-6 lead for the Bearcats. An impressive defensive effort from Onuki, freshman Jamie Netisingha (Westmont, Ill. /Hillsdale Central) and MacIntyre added to this lead 16-9. Harpenau then added two aces for a 20-9 score. The set ended with a Turner ace 25-16.
Kills from Refenes, Scott and Harpenau started the match with a commanding 16-10 lead. Scott then put down another kill followed by Mahoney and Hayden kills to extend the lead late in the set 22-15. Harpenau ended the set with a kill and a 25-15 win for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats are finished with their regular season but will learn their post-season fate Sunday November 27 during the NCAA selection show on ESPNU. The show is set to air at 6:00 p.m.
