HUNTINGTON, W. Va - The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team (6-2) was defeated by Marshall (6-2), 55-47, on Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Cam Henderson Center. The Bearcats were led by Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods/Michigan) with a game-high 17 points, while Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) pitched in another 12.
The Bearcats led by as much as 11, but the Thundering Herd came storming in by way of its six second-half 3-pointers to take the lead for good with 8:08 remaining. Despite shooting just 11 percent from behind the arc in the first half, MU made 54 percent of its shots from 3-point land in the second stanza to give the Herd the edge.
In a game of runs, Marshall started off with a 6-0 lead, but UC quickly caught up to the Thundering Herd thanks to a 19-3 run to give the Bearcats the 19-9 advantage with 8:30 left in the first half. MU's Lateidra Elliott scored five of Marshall's next nine while silencing the Bearcats to narrow the margin, but Hollins made the final shot to settle the 21-16 score at halftime.
The Herd made the first four points of the second half, but UC was able to build its margin back up to nine, 29-20, with 13:31 left before the hosts started chipping away at its lead again. Marshall's Jasmine Shaw caught fire and made 11 points in three minutes to make it 42-37 with 6:26 left. The Bearcats pulled within four, but couldn't come any closer as Marshall drained all eight of its free throw shots in the final minutes to make it 55-47.
Marshall was led by Shaw and Elliott with 13 and 12 points, respectively, while narrowly outrebounding Cincinnati, 41-37.
UC will open its BIG EAST slate when it welcomes Louisville to Fifth Third Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m.
