CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team welcomes BIG EAST foes Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Connecticut this weekend in a three-match homestand in the Western Tennis and Fitness Club.
The Bearcats begin the homestand on Friday, Feb. 24, at 5 p.m. when they take on the Pittsburgh Panthers. Pittsburgh (4-3) enters the match having lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Freshman Molly Wickman pushed NJIT's Carolina Zanotta to three sets before falling 1-6, 6-2 and 7-5.
On Saturday, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m. the Bearcats will face-off against West Virginia. The Mountaineers (2-6) return to action after being dropped by the Marquette Golden Eagles in a 6-1 decision. This loss ended a two-match winning streak by WVU in which they escaped with 4-3 decisions against both George Washington and Connecticut. The Mountaineers are led by Veronica Cardenas, who carries a 4-4 overall singles play record with a 2-1 BIG EAST singles play record.
The homestand will conclude on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 10 a.m. when the Bearcats battle the Connecticut Huskies. The Huskies are reeling after four-straight losses to begin their spring season. The latest defeat was a 4-3 heartbreaking loss to West Virginia in which Lucy Nutting fell to WVU's Veronica Cardena 6-1 in a tiebreaking third set.
Cincinnati looks to rebound after a 7-0 defeat against Akron. Ashleigh Witte leads the Bearcats with a 3-6 singles play record. The duo of Witte and Jasmine Lee account for two of the three doubles play wins of the season for UC.
