LYNCHBURG, Va. - Junior attack Marissa Pierson (Sykesville, Md./Century) netted a career-high four goals and led the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team (3-2) to a 13-8 victory against Liberty on Sunday afternoon in the first meeting between the two teams at Liberty Lacrosse Field.
Senior midfielder Laura Simanski (Reisterstown, Md./Roland Park) registered her fourth-straight multi-goal game with two goals and one assists, while leading scorer Katie Kiriazoglou (Abingdon, Md./John Carroll) finished with a game-high six points (3g, 3a).
The Bearcats only trailed by as many as two goals before evening the score, 5-5, at halftime. After a scoreless five minutes, Liberty's Kristin Crowley netted the first goal of the second half, but Pierson made the equalizer to make it 6-6 five minutes later and put the game in Cincinnati's control.
UC steadily increased its lead to a game-high four goals, 10-6, and Pierson scored the next two-straight to make it a 12-8 game before Kylie Ramsland (Catonsville, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) put in one more in the final minute to settle the 13-8 final score.
UC outshot Liberty, 28-18, and held the advantage in draw controls, 16-7. Jennifer Walsh (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) stopped seven shots, while Liberty's Kristen Masullo had eight saves.
Cincinnati hosts Iona in its home opener on Saturday, March 17 at 12 p.m.
