CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team saw their three-match winning streak come to an end after dropping a 5-2 decision against California (Pa.) on Wednesday afternoon in the Western Tennis and Fitness Club.
The Bearcats were swept in doubles play, which allowed CalU to gain a very important 1-0 lead going into the highly-competitive singles play. Jasmine Lee and Ashleigh Witte fell in a close 8-7 decision against Martina Rubesova and Franziska Steinhardt, while Kristina Georgieva and Safiyya Ismail dropped a 8-3 decision to Annabel Pieschl and Jade Pondicas. Sierra Sullivan and Carly Wilson came up short as well, falling 8-2 against CalU's Anastassiya Zherdeva and Ramona Czakon.
Singles action consisted of very competitve play from both sides, with four matches going to a tiebreaking third set.
Jasmine Lee got off to a quick start with a 6-2 decision against Martina Rubesova, but fell behind quickly in set two which resulted in her droppinig a 6-0 decision. She fought back in set three and came away victorious with a 6-4 decision.
Ashleigh Witte also survived in three sets, turning in decisions of 6-3, 3-6 and 6-2 to notch another singles play victory.
Kristina Georgieva and Safiyya Ismail were not as fortunate in singles play, with both dropping heartbreaking third set decisions. Ismail fell in a 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 decision, while Georgieva dropped a 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 decision.
Carly Wilson and Sierra Sullivan were both defeated in straight sets. Wilson fell 6-1, 6-1 to Ramona Czakon, with Sullivan droppinig a 6-3, 6-5 decision to CalU's Anastassiya Zherdeva.
The Bearcats return to action on Sunday, March 11, at 1 p.m. when they travel to Toldeo to take on the Toldeo Rockets.
