CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati student-athlete Joey Bielek (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chapparal) was named to the weekly BIG EAST Conference Baseball Honor Roll Tuesday.
Bielek, a freshman third baseman, hit .438 (7 for 16) with four RBI and a .500 slugging percentage, leading the Bearcats to a 3-1 record after a four-game series against Oakland (Mich.) University last weekend at Marge Schott Stadium.
In the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, Bielek hit a walk-off, two-RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift UC past Oakland 5-4 and finished the game with a career-high four hits in five at-bats.
Through 10 games in the 2012 season, Bielek ranks second on the team with a .343 batting average to go with four RBIs, two doubles, and four runs scored.
A 2011 first team all-state high school performer out of Arizona, Bielek is the first Bearcat this season to be named to the weekly honor roll. Last year a UC ballplayer was named to the honor roll seven times, while one was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.
Cincinnati continues its 10-game homestand 4 p.m. Friday when it welcomes Chicago State University to Marge Schott Stadium for a four-game series that concludes Sunday. All four games can be seen live on GoBEARCATS.com/allaccess.
SEASON TICKET UPDATE: As of Tuesday, the UC ticket office has sold a record 954 baseball season tickets and is quickly approaching the 1,000 season ticket barrier. Season tickets can be purchased through catstix.com or by calling 877-CATSTIX.
