CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati track and field squad opens up the 2012 outdoor season at home Saturday, playing host to the Early Bird Relays at Gettler Stadium.

Tickets are available at the gate and cost $5 for adults, $3 for children and $1 each for groups of 10 or more. UC students receive free admission with a student ID. Concessions and restrooms will be available at Gettler Stadium.

The meet gets underway at 9 a.m. ET with the men's hammer throw at Coy Field. Other events at Coy Field include the women's hammer throw at 11:30 a.m., the women's javelin at 2 p.m. and the men's javelin at 3:30 p.m.

Field events at Gettler Stadium will lead off with the women's discus at 9 a.m., followed by the men's event at 11:30 a.m. The men's and women's shot put will begin at 1 and 3:30 p.m., respectively. In the jumps, the long jump leads off at 10 a.m., followed by the triple jump at 12:30 p.m. The women's high jump starts at 11 a.m. with the men's event to follow at 1 p.m. The men's pole vault is set for an 11 a.m. start with the women to folow at 1:30 p.m.

The men's 3,000 steeplechase starts the track events off at noon with the women's 5,000 meters following at 12:13 p.m. Track events continue with the 4x400 relay set to wrap things up at 4:52 p.m. for the women and 5:07 p.m. for the men.

The scoring in the Early Bird Relays differs from other events. In order to earn first-place points, a team has to have the best combined time or mark from two of its own athletes. The next team with the best combined time or mark earns second-place points through the eight scored places.

The UC men's team won the meet a year ago, taking first-place honors in nine events. Javelin thrower Brian Zimmerman brokes his own school record in the javelin with a heave of 225-11.75. Zimmerman, who missed much of the 2011 outdoor season due to injury, is entered in Saturday's competition.

The Bearcats women's squad was second behind Dayton, winning seven events on the day.
