BALTIMORE, Md. - The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team (3-5, 0-2 BIG EAST) started strong, but couldn't hold on as it was defeated by Loyola (6-3, 2-0 BIG EAST), 16-8, on Friday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Senior midfielder Rachel Mercier (Catonsville, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy), who has recorded a goal in every contest this season, netted the first goal of the evening 39 seconds in, but then it was all Loyola, who went on to score the next seven-straight in just over 13 minutes to make it 7-1 midway through the first half.
Freshman midfielder Megan Bell (Baltimore, Md./Hereford) and senior midfielder MacKenzie Parsons (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) scored four minutes apart, while the Greyhounds built their lead up to 11-3 at the intermission.
Cincinnati was the first to strike after halftime via a goal by sophomore midfielder Kelsey Conway (Laurel, Md./North Harford), but two-straight Loyola goals kept the game in the hosts' control, 13-4, just five minutes into the second half. UC went on a 4-1 scoring run over a 10-minute span, including back-to-back goals from junior attack Marissa Pierson (Sykesville, Md./Century), but Loyola netted the final two of the contest to defeat the Bearcats.
Cincinnati's sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Walsh (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) stopped10 shots, while Natalia Angelo and Kerry Stoothoff shared time for Loyola and combined for six saves.
The Bearcats were outshot, 37-16, and struggled to maintain possession of the ball as the Greyhounds caused 18 of UC's 20 turnovers.
UC continues its road trip when it travels to Davidsonville, Md. for a neutral site draw with Oregon on Sunday, April 1 at 12 p.m.
