CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team will welcome crosstown rival Xavier in the Bearcats' final home match and first outdoor home match of the season on Tuesday, April 10, at 3 p.m. on UC's campus in the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center.
Prior to the match, senior Safiyya Ismail will be honored for her contributions to the women's tennis program. In four seasons, Ismail has compiled a current 41-44 career singles record and a 47-39 career doubles record.
The Bearcats will try to improve their 5-5 home record with a victory over the Musketeers that would put their home record above .500 at 6-5. UC is currently tied with last season's mark of five home victories.
Cincinnati will also look to improve their recent string of success against the Musketeers whom they have defeated four times in their last five meetings. Last season, the Bearcats turned in a victorious 5-2 decision against XU in which they claimed the doubles point and secured singles victories at Nos. 2, 4, 5, and 6.
UC will enter play having won their previous match, a 7-0 decision against Tri-State rival Northern Kentucky on April 4 in the Western Tennis and Fitness Club. The Bearcats got on the board early by sweeping the doubles point and continued the success by taking all six singles matches in straight sets.
Ashleigh Witte was able to pick up her eleventh singles win of the season and the sophomore maintains her standing as the team leader in singles play with an 11-9 overall record. The win also added to an outstanding 7-3 record in her last ten singles matches.
Xavier currently holds a 14-5 overall season record after defeating Saint Louis, 4-3, in XU's Atlantic 10 regular season finale. The win also improved the Musketeers' A-10 record to 5-1 to close the season.
The Musketeers split against SLU in singles play but were able to secure the all-important doubles point which propelled them to victory. Strong performances were turned in by Daniella Patton and Andrea Wolf in the No. 2 doubles position with an 8-4 victory and by Allyson Westling and Lizzie Oosterbaan in the No.3 doubles position with an 8-3 win.
