OXFORD, Ohio - The University of Cincinnati baseball team will play cross-town rival Xavier University 3 p.m. Wednesday in the third-place game of the 2012 Joe Nuxhall Classic at McKie Field on the campus of Miami (Ohio) University.

The reigning two-time defending Joe Nuxhall Classic champions, Cincinnati failed to advance to the title game for the first time since the 2009 season after UC fell to Wright State University 3-2 Tuesday afternoon.

Xavier lost to Miami 1-0 in a pitcher's duel Tuesday evening at McKie Field in the second game of the opening round of the Nuxhall Classic.

Senior left-hander Brad Mergen (Albany, Minn./Albany/Indian Hills CC) will start for the Bearcats against Xavier.

Cincinnati and Xavier will play for the 114th time since 1958, UC's second longest running rivalry. The Bearcats own the all-time series record over the Musketeers 72-40-1.

Miami and Wright State will play for the first Nuxhall championship for either team following the UC-XU game approximately 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
