The University of Cincinnati celebrates this week's Bearcat Friday Winner!

The University of Cincinnati Athletic Department developed a way for campus offices and businesses around the country to join in on the fun and show their Bearcat spirit!

This week's Bearcat Friday Winner is UC's East Campus Power Plant on Eden Ave. In honor of Earth Week, the power plant conducted a start-up test in the conversion of a UC coal-burning boiler to one that primarily operates on waste wood chips. These waste wood chips will result in a cleaner environment and more economical energy source than coal. The Bearcat mascot was in attendance and helped shovel the initial supply of waste wood chips into a chute for the start up test. After about 10 minutes of shoveling, the Bearcat let the backhoe take over and had the opportunity to learn more about the control panel inside the power plant. The Bearcat also got to look inside the boiler where the fire is fed by a waste wood chip/coal mixture.

The University of Cincinnati has been named to The Princeton Review's list of the nation's best green schools for the past three years - leading in environmental practices and preparing the next generation of green professionals. The university has worked for over two years with the EPA and Ohio Department of Development on plans to convert the on-campus, coal-burning boiled into an alternative energy unit that will primarily burn waste wood chips by 2014.

How Does Bearcat Friday Work?

Sponsored by the UC Department of Athletics, UC Office of Trademarks, and the UC Alumni Association, Bearcats fans can participate in the fun and show support by signing up and wearing red and black on Fridays throughout the academic year. In addition to competing against other participating groups to show off your Bearcat spirit with pride, registering will make you eligible to win prizes for your group and maybe even get a visit from the Bearcat himself.

Register your business/group by clicking here. Random businesses will be selected to participate in Bearcats Friday and will be contacted if chosen.

Your business/group will receive a sign to display showing your support to our students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and that you are a proud member of Bearcats Nation!
