ORLANDO, Fla. - University of Cincinnati freshman Jared Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) carded an even-par 72 Sunday and is tied for 11th place after the first round of the BIG EAST Championship at Reunion Resort (par 72, 7.089 yards).
Howard, who recorded six birdies on the day, trails Justin Dorward of Louisville by five strokes. Dorward registered a 5-under par 67.
Overall, the Bearcats struggled as a squad and are 12th after the first day after a 25-over par 313. Notre Dame leads the team standings at 4-under par 284.
UC junior David Tepe (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) shot an opening round 7-over par 79 and is in 47th place. Junior Andrew Desmarias (Union, Ky./Ryle) and freshman Michael Wolf (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) are tied for 51st place at 81. Freshman Mike Irwin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) shot an 84 and is in 57th place.
"Jared Howard was great playing in his first career round at the BIG EAST Championship," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "But overall, today was not the start we hoped for. We continue to makes mistakes we cannot afford and play stretches of holes that really hurt us. We have 36 more holes to play and need to eliminate our foolish mistakes."
