OMAHA, Neb. - Former University of Cincinnati swimmer Josh Schneider swam the fifth-fastest time in the world Saturday to qualify for the 50-meter freestyle final at the U.S. Olympic Trials at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb.

Swimming in the first of two semifinals, Schneider posted a career-best time of 21.81, tying for the top spot in his heat with Nathan Adrian and setting the second-fastest qualifying time of the day behind Anthony Ervin (21.74).

In the Saturday morning preliminary round, Schneider clocked 22.21 in the 15th of 17 heats to post the sixth-fastest qualifier entering the semifinals.

Schneider, the 2010 NCAA Champion in the 50-yard freestyle, had a previous personal-best long-course time of 22.10 from the 2012 Charlotte UltraSwim Grand Prix. He is the American Record Holder in the short-course 50-meter freestyle (20.88).

The 50 freestyle final is Sunday at 8:51 p.m. ET with the Top-2 swimmers earning berths on the U.S. squad. NBC will provide live TV coverage.
