OXFORD, Ohio — University of Cincinnati junior swimmer Joe Scherpenberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) placed first Thursday in the 100-meter long course backstroke final during the USA Swimming Central Zone Section 3 Speedo Champions Series at Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
Scherpenberg clocked in with a personal-best of 57.57 seconds, the first time he's produced a national time standard mark.
He improved his preliminary time of 58.23 by 1.69 seconds.
Scherpenberg is now qualified for USA Swimming's national meets in the 100 back after topping the time standards of 57.59 seconds.
