WEST HARRISON, Ind. - The University of Cincinnati football team practiced twice Thursday, its ninth and 10th preseason practices, at the Higher Ground Conference & Retreat Center in West Harrison, Ind.
The morning workout took place under sunny skies while the evening practice was cloudy and cut short by thunderstorms in the area.
In the evening, Head Coach Butch Jones welcomed over 100 members of the 1200 Club and UCATS George Smith Society to Higher Ground. After having dinner with the team, Coach Jones introduced Director of Athletics Whit Babcock who spoke to the crowd. Coach Jones gave the group an update on camp and then took questions from the audience. Participants moved on to position group meetings and then were on the field to watch UC's full pads workout
A crew from FOX Sports Ohio was also at Higher Ground on Thursday, filming in preparation for UC's preseason preview show. The 30-minute show will feature in-depth interviews with the UC student-athletes and Head Coach Butch Jones.
The show will replay on August 30 at 9:30 p.m., August 31 at 7 p.m., and several times during the first week of September leading up to the Bearcats' season opener against Pittsburgh on Thursday, September 6 at 8 p.m.
This special preview is hosted by Tom Gelehrter, the University of Cincinnati's director of new media and broadcasting. Gelehrter serves as sideline reporter for UC football broadcasts on 700-WLW and is the play-by-play voice for Bearcats broadcasts on FOX Sports Ohio.
UC will return to practice on Saturday with another two-a-day session. First up for the Bearcats Friday is photo day tomorrow afternoon at Camp Higher Ground.
BIG EAST NAMES NEW COMMISIONER
- Mike Aresco, Executive Vice President, Programming of CBS Sports, has been named Commissioner of The BIG EAST Conference. The appointment was made by a unanimous vote of the league's Presidents.
- Aresco will assume Commissioner's duties in early September.
- UC President Dr. Gregory Williams chaired the search committee.
- At CBS Sports, Aresco has been responsible for all college programming for the Network. In addition, he has been involved with the strategic development of CBS Sports Network programming. He joined CBS Sports as Vice President, Programming, in 1996 and was promoted to Senior Vice President in 2000 and named Executive Vice President, Programming in 2008. He is responsible for managing the division's college sports properties, including contract negotiations and future acquisitions for the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship, regular-season college basketball and football bowl games. He also has been responsible for administering the network's various NCAA properties.
