CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati volleyball team fell 3-0 (20-25, 17-25, 14-25) to No. 12 Florida State University during the finale of the ComCast Lady Vol Classic in Knoxville, Tenn. For the second time in three matches, senior Jordanne Scott (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) recorded the most kills of all players, notching 16. Sophomore Madison Lang tallied 30 assists and four digs in the match.
Following the match Emily MacIntyre (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) was named to the ComCast Lady Vol All-Tournament team. During the tournament, the junior played in all 10 sets for the Bearcats, recording 42 digs for a 4.20 digs-per-set tally.
"The things that we need to improve upon after this weekend are nothing major" said head coach Molly Alvey. "It is a simple, tiny switch of our mindset that will completely change the level of ball we are playing. Very specifically, we need to serve tougher and continue to control the match with our first contact."
The Bearcats (0-3) jumped out to an early lead in the first set. Scott registered one of her seven first-set kills to push the lead to 15-12, but the Seminoles (3-0) used a couple of UC errors to take a 17-16 advantage and led the remainder of the set. A service ace by FSU's Laura Dadowski won the set 25-20 and gave Florida State a 1-0 lead in the match.
Lang set the pace for Cincinnati in the second set, logging 12 assists and one block in the stanza. She had a hand in several critical points, including an assist to senior Emily Hayden (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) whose kill tied the set at 9-9. The Bearcats held close with the Seminoles until five consecutive FSU points opened a 19-13 Florida State lead. The set ended with a 25-17 tally in favor of the Seminoles.
UC opened the third set as the aggressors, using a FSU attacking error to gain an early 4-1 lead, but again suffered a series of runs by Florida State. With the Bearcats down 13-10, the Seminoles rattled off six straight points to take a 19-10 lead. A kill by FSU's Mara Green ended the set 25-14 and gave the Seminoles the 3-0 victory.
Overall, Cincinnati registered 34 kills and a .126 attacking percentage while combining for 32 assists and 31 digs.
With the loss, UC failed to avenge a defeat by FSU that knocked it out of the NCAA tournament last season.
The Bearcats will be back in action Aug. 31 when they face New Mexico State at 9 p.m. ET in Las Creces, N.M., at the New Mexico State Tournament. They also will face Northwestern and Drake on Sept. 1.
