ST. LOUIS - The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision against No. 12/9 Indiana on Sunday afternoon at the Billiken Classic in Hermann Stadium.
Cincinnati fell to 1-1-0 on the season while Indiana improved to 2-0-0.
"This was a very difficult match for us playing without a few starters and we struggled from the beginning to get a foothold on the game," said head coach Hylton Dayes. "I felt that fitness was a factor as the game progressed and we became fatigued, leading to defensive breakdowns that led to the goals."
The match was scoreless through the first 67 minutes, but Indiana struck in the 68th when Eriq Zavaleta grabbed his own rebound and beat goalkeeper Taylor Hafling for his second goal of the season.
With the Bearcats pushing forward looking for the equalizer, Caleb Kostanski added to the IU lead in the 83rd, taking a cross from Jacob Bushue and finished from inside the penalty area.
Zavaleta closed out the scoring from the penalty spot in the 85th minute.
"Give credit to Indiana, they wore us down and deserved the win," Dayes added. "We will learn from this experience and use the coming days to get some things sorted out."
UC's home opener is set for Thursday, Aug. 30, against St. Francis (PA). Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Gettler Stadium.
