CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati volleyball team downed DePaul University 3-1 (26-28, 25-13, 25-23, 25-20) Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Arena for its first home win of the season. Senior Jordanne Scott (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) recorded her second double-double of the season with a match-high 24 kills and 16 digs.
The Bearcats (3-11, 1-1 BIG EAST) recorded a season-high 68 kills and out-hit the Blue Demons (5-9, 0-2 BIG EAST) by 24 (68 to 44). Three Bearcats registered double-digit kills, including Scott with 24, senior Emily Hayden (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) with 13 and freshman Amelia Wegman (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) with a career-high 11. Senior Rachel Rohlfs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Grand Valley State) finished with 55 assists in the match, while junior Emily MacIntyre added a match-high 28 digs.
The win was both the first home win of the season for the Bearcats, and the first win of BIG EAST play.
DePaul took control of the match early, winning the first game 28-16. The Bearcats fell behind when the Blue Demons capitalized on three UC errors to take a 4-2 lead. Cincinnati used a kill by Scott to tie the game at 8-8, but DePaul quickly regained the lead at 10-8 following a UC error and a block. DPU's Callie Huebener recorded a kill to extend the lead to 20-17, but the Bearcats clawed their way back to tie the score at 21-21 following a kill by Wegman and back-to-back DePaul errors. Each team served for game point twice down the stretch, but DePaul was able to take advantage of a UC attacking error to finish the set 28-26. MacIntyre led the Bearcats with nine digs in the game while Rohlfs contributed 11 assists.
Cincinnati responded in the second game, winning 25-13 and tying the match at 1-1. The Bearcats stormed out of the gates, using six straight points, including three blocks, to take a 7-2 lead. The Bearcat advantage grew to 16-6 following a string of five straight UC points. Scott recorded two kills during the run while Rohlfs and Hayden also tallied kills for the Bearcats. Wegman added back-to-back kills to bring the score to 21-8, and scored the final three points for the Bearcats, including game point for a 25-13 victory. The freshman finished the game with six kills and a .625 hitting percentage. Cincinnati recorded a .469 attacking percentage in the set. The Bearcats also did not allow a DePaul block after falling victim to 8.5 Blue Demon blocks in the first game.
Cincinnati came from behind to win the third set 25-23 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Bearcats took an early 4-1 lead, but five consecutive DePaul points put the Blue Demons ahead 6-4. DPU remained ahead until a Scott kill gave the Bearcats a 12-11 advantage. After UC had established a 15-13 lead, DePaul stormed back with three unanswered points to take back the lead at 16-15. The Blue Demon lead grew to 21-18 before three straight kills from Scott and a service ace from Rohlfs put the Bearcats up 22-21. On game point, Refenes recorded her seventh kill of the match to give Cincinnati a 25-23 win.
UC earned a 25-20 win in the fourth game to win the match 3-1. With the game tied at 6-6, the Bearcats used three kills by Hayden and a DePaul error to take a 9-6 lead. The Cincinnati lead grew to 17-12 following a kill by Wegman and a Wegman/Hayden block. The Blue Demons rattled off four consecutive points to bring the score to 19-17, but it was all Bearcats to close out the game. Back-to-back kills by Scott and sophomore Me'Ashah Nicholson (Shiloh, Ill./Belleville Althoff) gave Cincinnati match-point, and Scott's 24th kill closed the match at 25-20.
The Bearcats will be back in action when they travel to Pittsburgh on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. to continue BIG EAST play.
