CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati volleyball team will host BIG EAST foes Rutgers and Seton Hall this weekend at Fifth Third Arena in conjunction with the university's homecoming white out promotions. The Bearcats will take on the Scarlet Knights at 3 p.m. on Fri., Oct. 5 and will meet the Pirates at 2 p.m. on Sun., Oct. 7. Fans are encouraged to wear white to both matches to support UC homecoming.
The Bearcats also will host a post-match volleyball clinic after the match on Sunday. The team will go over drills and technique with all fans ages 14 and under. The clinic will take approximately 30 minutes. Please wear athletic shoes if you wish to participate.
Cincinnati enters the match with a 4-13 overall record and a 2-2 BIG EAST mark. The team is coming off a tough 3-2 loss to crosstown rival Xavier on Oct. 2.
The Bearcats are led by a strong cast of six seniors, including two with nationally-ranked statistics. Jordanne Scott (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) ranks second in the conference and 20th in the nation with 4.43 kills/set. Also ranking among the nation's elite is Rachel Rohlfs (Cincinnati, Ohio./Grand Valley State) who sits at third in the conference and 30th in the NCAA with 11.18 assists/game.
RUTGERS SERIES
The Bearcats are 9-3 all-time against the Scarlet Knights and 7-0 since joining the BIG EAST Conference in 2005. Since becoming league foes, Cincinnati has won by a total margin of 21-2, only dropping single sets in 2005 and 2011. In the last match between the two teams, UC downed RU 3-1 in Oct. 2011 in Piscataway, N.J. Jordanne Scott recorded a match-high 13 kills with a .435 hitting percentage.
ABOUT THE SCARLET KNIGHTS
Rutgers has recorded a 15-4 record this season and is 1-3 in conference play. The Scarlet Knights got off to one of the best starts in school history, winning 14 of their first 15 games, including a streak of 12-straight victories to close out non-conference play. RU is led offensively by freshman Alex Lassa with 3.74 kills/set. Stephanie Zielinski is currently leading the BIG EAST with 11.47 assists/set while Tracy Wright paces the team with 4.45 digs/set.
SETON HALL SERIES
Cincinnati holds the all-time advantage over Seton Hall 5-2, with all matches coming since 2005 when Cincinnati joined the BIG EAST. The Pirates swept the Bearcats 3-0 last season in a match played in South Orange, N.J. The loss was the first of conference play for the Bearcats and one of only two they would suffer in 2011. Emily Hayden led the Cincinnati effort with 11 kills and a .471 attacking percentage.
ABOUT THE PIRATES
Seton Hall has compiled an impressive 15-2 record this season and are ranked eighth in the NCAA with a .882 winning percentage. The Pirates also have produced a solid 3-1 conference record thus far and are led offensively by a pair of sisters. Stacey Manthorpe leads with 2.94 kills/set while Shelbey Manthorpe tallies 7.77 assists/set. Alyssa Warren leads the team, and ranks third in the conference, with 5.40 digs/set.
Story Lines:
- The Bearcats are a combined 12-2 against Rutgers and Seton Hall since joining the BIG EAST in 2005. The two losses were both to Seton Hall (2011, 2007). Cincinnati also has recorded seven 3-0 victories during the seven-year span.
- Senior Jordanne Scott has recorded double-digit kills in all but two matches this season. Overall, Scott has hit in double digits in 31 of the last 33 matches, dating back to Oct. 18, 2011. vs. Western Kentucky. Scott's season-high kills for the 2012 season is 24, one shy of her career-high, tallied on Sept. 23 against DePaul.
- Senior Jordanne Scott leads Cincinnati with 4.43 kills/set, senior Rachel Rohlfs leads with 11.18 assists/set, senior Becca Refenes leads with 0.86 blocks/set and junior Emily MacIntyre leads with 5.05 digs per set.
- Cincinnati ranks eighth in the BIG EAST with a .213 hitting percentage. It also ranks sixth with 12.60 assists/set and sixth with 13.37 kills/set.
- Scott's 4.43 kills/set rank her second in the BIG EAST and tie her for 14th in the NCAA. Rohlfs is third the conference, and ranks No. 18 in the NCAA, with 11.18 assists/set. MacIntyre ranks sixth in the conference with 5.05 digs/set.
- Four current players are ranked among the program's elite in six different career statistical categories. Senior Emily Hayden is sixth in career hitting percentage with a .308 mark. Junior Emily MacIntyre sits at second in the record book with a 4.08 career digs per set clip. She also ranks fifth with 1,321 career digs. Senior Becca Refenes is currently in seventh with 390 block assists. Refenes also has 444 career blocks to put her at tenth. Senior Jordanne Scott is 10th in career hitting percentage with a .287 mark. She also has 1,421 career kills to rank at No. 10 in the record book. She needs 22 more kills to move up the leaderboard into ninth place (1,443).
