HEBRON, Ky. - University of Cincinnati freshman Emerson Newsome carded an even par 72 and is tied for 10th place after first-round play at the Bearcat Invitational at Traditions Golf Club.
Newsome posted four bogies after his first eight holes but rallied on his final 10 holes with four birdies and six pars. He trails tournament leader Corey Richmond from Northern Kentucky, who posted a 5-under par 67 in the first round.
"Emerson is beginning to become more comfortable playing collegiate golf," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "He's starting to understand how to manage the course better. He's a player that is very talented and can be as good as he wants to be."
Belmont leads the team standings after the first 18 holes with a 1-under par 287. The Bearcats have two squads competing in the 13-team event. The Red team is tied with Marshall for sixth place at 8-over par 296. UC's White team is in 13th place at 315.
Other Bearcats leading the Red team are sophomore Jared Howard and senior David Tepe each tied for 28th place at 2-over par 74. Freshman Blake Hamilton is tied for 39th place at 4-over par 76. Sophomore Spencer Mellon is tied for 64th place at 9-over par 81.
UC's White team is led by senior Andrew Desmarais, who is tied for 33rd place at 3-over par 75. Sophomore Mike Irwin is tied for 48th position after a 5-over 77. Sophomore Michael Wolf is tied for 55th place at 13-over 85. Freshman Chris Correia posted an 85 in his first round of collegiate golf. Junior Zach Bates recorded an 86.
UC freshman Adam Millson, playing as an individual, registered an 88 in his first round of collegiate golf.
"Overall, I'm pretty happy with our first round," Martin said. "We had some people recover from a slow start and play better during the round, but we had others that left some shots out on the course near the end of the round. It's a tightly bunched field, so it should be an exciting final day tomorrow."
The tournament's start was delayed an hour and 40 minutes due to frost. Second-round play began on Monday but was scheduled to stop at 7 p.m. due to darkness. Action will pick back up Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. with final-round play to being after the second round concludes.
