CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati volleyball team topped St. John's 3-1 (25-14, 19-25, 25-18, 25-21) on Sunday afternoon in Queens, N.Y. for its fourth consecutive win. Senior Emily Hayden's .526 attacking percentage led the Bearcats.

"We played good volleyball today" said head coach Molly Alvey. "We are playing our system for longer periods of time and we got better each set. Late in sets three and four we made some good defensive plays that helped us pick up one or two points. Karen Onuki, Emily MacIntyre and Jamie Netisingha all played great defense today."

Cincinnati (8-13, 6-2 BIG EAST) registered 58 kills to St. John's (17-6, 4-3 BIG EAST) 43, while also out blocking the Johnnies 11.0 to 7.0. The Bearcats' 53 assists and 64 digs also topped the Red Storm's 39 and 52, respectively.

Emily Hayden (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) led the Bearcats with a .526 attacking clip and 13 kills. Senior Jordanne Scott (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) added 22 kills and 13 digs for fourth double-double of the season. Senior Rachel Rohlfs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Grand Valley State) contributed a match-high 42 assists to the match while defensive specialist junior Emily MacIntyre (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) had a match-high 22 digs. Sophomore Jamie Netisingha (Westmont, Ill./Hinsdale Central) tied a career-high with 11 digs.

In the deciding fourth set, the Bearcats fell behind 8-5 early, forcing Alvey to call a timeout. Out of the break, UC rallied with three straight points, including a kill by senior Becca Refenes (Westland, Mich./Lutheran Westland) and a block from sophomore Me'Ashah Nicholson (Shiloh, Ill./Belleville Althoff), to tie the score at 8-8. The teams traded points until a kill by Hayden and three consecutive kills by Scott put the Bearcats up 15-13. The Bearcats held off a late rally from the Red Storm and used Hayden's 13th kill of the match to close out the game 25-21 and win the match 3-1.

Cincinnati jumped out to a 1-0 match lead after winning the first set 25-14. Hayden collected three consecutive kills and the Bearcats rattled off six straight points to take an early 13-5 lead. After a kill by St. John's brought the score to 16-9, the Cincinnati put together another six-point run, including two kills apiece by Scott and sophomore Me'Ashah Nicholson (Shiloh, Ill./Belleville Althoff), to push the lead to 22-9. The Red Storm rallied for three consecutive points before back-to-back kills by senior Becca Refenes (Westland, Mich/Lutheran Westland) and Hayden ended the game at 25-14. Scott and Hayden each recorded five kills in the set while Rohlfs added 13 assists.

STJ tied the match at 1-1 in the second set with a 25-19 victory over UC. The Red Storm used a four-point run to grab a 20-15 lead before the Bearcats responded with four consecutive points of their own to climb back to within one at 20-19. Cincinnati would not score again, however, and St. John's closed out the game with five straight points. MacIntyre had eight digs in the game and Scott had five kills.

Cincinnati got a point back in the third, winning 25-19 to take a 2-1 match lead. The Bearcats stormed out of the gate, surging to a 16-7 lead following two kills by Scott and a kill by Hayden. UC increased its lead to 21-12 after back-to-back kills from Nicholson and maintained the lead through the match. A kill by freshman Amelia Wegman (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) gave the Bearcats the final tally of 25-19. Hayden and Scott each contributed five kills in the game.

The Bearcats will be back on the court on Fri., Oct. 19 when they travel to BIG EAST foe Marquette for an 8 p.m. matchup.
