CINCINNATI -- Senior point guard Cashmere Wright (Savannah, Ga./Urban Christian Academy) scored a career-high 28 points and the No. 22-ranked University of Cincinnati men's basketball team topped Campbell University 91-72 Tuesday evening at Fifth Third Arena.
Wright shot 8 of 14 from the floor, including 4 for 6 from 3-point range, while adding a season-high five steals, two assists and his first block of the year. As a team, the Bearcats shot an even 50 percent (32-64) from the field.
UC's two other senior guards - JaQuon Parker (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) and Sean Kilpatrick (Yonkers, N.Y./Notre Dame Prep) - added 21 points and 15 points, respectively. Kilpatrick also produced 10 rebounds, which ties his career high, for his second-career double-double, and Parker recorded a season-high eight boards.
The Bearcats controlled the glass all night on the boards, out-rebounding the Fighting Camels 50-28, which led to a 17-2 advantage in second-chance points.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Kilpatrick gave UC its largest lead of the game at 69-44 at the 11:38 mark of the second half.
The Fighting Camels went on a late 16-4 run to cut UC's lead to 75-64 with 5:21 left to play. CU's senior guard Darren White, who entered the day averaging 25.5 points per game, scored 12 of his 22 points during the run.
UC responded with six consecutive points to increase its lead to 81-64 and hold onto the win.
Cincinnati took a 46-28 lead into halftime after sophomore guard Jeremiah Davis III (Muncie, Ind./Huntington Prep [W.Va.]) netted a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the top of the key for the fifth Bearcats' trey of the first half.
Wright (13 points) and Parker (12) led all scorers in the first half as the senior-guard duo combined to shoot 8 for 14 from the field, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range.
Bench points were in favor of the Bearcats, as the UC reserves produced 23 points compared with four by Campbell.
The Bearcats took a 14-point lead, at 27-13, at the 10:14 mark of the first half on a pair of free throws by Parker, which capped a 9-0 run over a 2:30 span.
Parker later capped a 7-0 run with a 3-pointer from the left corner at the 6:35 mark of the first to put UC ahead 36-15.
UC will play its first games away from Fifth Third Arena this weekend, starting with a 6:30 p.m. ET Friday contest versus Iowa State in Las Vegas, Nev. as part of the Global Sports Invitational, which will be televised live on CBS Sports Network.
