CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (26-24, 18-25, 22-25, 21-25) loss in its final game of the season at Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, Nov. 24.
The Bearcats (12-20, 9-6 BIG EAST) earned 54 kills and recorded a .226 hitting percentage against the RedHawks' (10-20, 4-12 MAC) 58 kills and .338 hitting percentage. Seniors Megan Turner (Ontario, N.Y./ Wayne Central) and Jordanne Scott (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) led UC with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Junior Emily MacIntyre's (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) made a match-high 15 digs.
Cincinnati won the first set in the competitive match, 26-24. The Bearcats never trailed by more than one point and led by as many as four. The Cats called their lone timeout of the game following MU 6-2 run to give the RedHawks their second lead of the game at 23-22. Back to back kills from both Scott and senior Becca Refenes (Westland, Mich./Lutheran Westland) gave UC the win. Scott contributed eight of her 10 kills in the set, while Refenes earned all but one of her one of her seven kills.
Out of the gate, the second set remained tight until a 7-1 and run by RedHawks forced Cincinnati head coach Molly Alvey to call a timeout at 14-9, MU. The RedHawks lead stretched to 12 points before the Red and Black were able to close the gap to six at 23-17. A service error by and a kill from Lisa Treadway gave the MU the second game, 25-18. The RedHawks finished the game with 13 kills to UC's seven.
Set three was back and forth with no team trailing by more than two until Miami took a three-point lead at 19. Back-to-back kills from Morgan Allred (Carrolton, Texas/Hebron) brought the Bearcats to within one until a Cincinnati hitting error and MU kill took the lead back to three. Following a UC timeout, Alvey's team was able to shrink the gap back to two, before the RedHawks claimed the set, 25-22.
Entering the fourth set, MU jumped to a 3-0 ended by an Emily Hayden (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) kill. The Bearcats scored two more points to tie the game at three, prior to Miami going on a 5-1 run. Miami errors, and kills from Turner and Me'Ashah Nicholson (Shiloh, Ill./Belleville Althoff) gave UC the 12-11 lead. The Bearcats lead once more throughout the match. After a 4-2 run by UC, the Cats were within one of MU at 21-20 and forced a timeout. Out of the break, the RedHawks clinched the match, outscoring UC four to one to win 25-21.
The Bearcats end their first season under Coach Alvey with a 12-20 overall record.
