CONWAY, S.C. - Freshman midfielder Courtney Curtis (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) scored a game-high five goals Friday afternoon as the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team, under first-year head coach Gina Oliver, opened the 2013 campaign on Friday with a 13-8 in CCU's inaugural game.
Five other student-athletes scored for the Bearcats, including Taylor Young (3), Meg Bell (2), Katie Kiriazoglou (1), Kylie Ramsland (1) and Ashley Helmrath (1).
After UC took a 1-0 lead, the Chants scored two goals to take the lead back 2-1. The Bearcats then scored four straight goals, including two by Young and one each by Kiriazoglou and Bell to take a 5-2 advantage.
The Bearcats led 8-4 at the half, and the two teams traded goals for much of the second half, but Cincinnati never gave up the lead.
UC outscored the Chants 5-4 in the second half as they defeated CCU 13-8.
Freshman goalkeeper Meg Gulmi, credited with Friday's win, finished the day with eight saves.
The Chants were paced by Keri White with three goals.
The Bearcats forced eight turnovers and grabbed 16 ground balls, while scoring 13-of-17 shots on goal.
The Chants (0-1) battle Marquette on Sunday, February 17. The Bearcats (1-0) have nine days off and return to action on February 24 in a road contest against Oregon at 3 p.m. ET.
