CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati men's golf team opened its spring season at the USF Invitational on Sun., March 3 in at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla. The team currently sits in 14th place after the first day of competition with a score of 306 (18 over par). Sophomore Michael Wolf (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) leads the Bearcats with a 74, which ties him for 22nd place individually.
"The conditions were very difficult today" said head coach Doug Martin. "It was very windy and cold, with wind chills in the low 40's. I was pleased with what I saw for our first round of the spring."
The Bearcats will enter Day 2 leading three teams, including two BIG EAST foes in Marquette and DePaul. No. 41 South Carolina and North Carolina State currently lead the pack of 17 teams with a one under par 287.
In the individual competition, senior David Tepe (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) sits in second for Cincinnati with a 76, followed by sophomore Jared Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) with a 77, freshman Blake Hamilton (Union, Ky./Ryle) with a 79 and freshman Emerson Newsome (Hoschton, Ga./Mill Creek) with an even 80.
Three golfers are tied for the lead, shooting for under par for a score of 68. South Carolina's Dykes Harbin, North Carolina State's Albin Choi and Kentucky's Stephen Powers are all at the top of the leaderboard heading into Day 2.
The USF Invitational will continue with 18 holes on Mon., March 4 and will finish with a final 18-hole round on Tues., March 5.
