Mackenzie Fields became just the fourth women's indoor track & field All-American in UC history when she finished 10th in the pole vault at the NCAA national championship meet. The event was held at the University of Arkansas's Randal Tyson Track Center.
Fields, a senior from Cincinnati (Mariemont HS), joins Miriam Merrill (2001 weight throw), Kathy Klump (2012 800 meters) and Jasmine Cotton (2012 pentathlon and high jump) as UC's women's indoor track & field All-Americans.
Fields cleared the first two heights in the pole vault competition - 13' 1.25" and 13' 5.25" - on her first attempt at each. But she missed on three attempts at 13' 9.25", placing her 10th in the competition and ahead of two others who made 13" 5.25" but with more misses. Natalia Bartnovskaya from the University of Kansas won with a 14' 7.25" mark.
"Mackenzie did a great job performing in the sweet sixteen of college indoor track," said head coach Susan Seaton. "She is the first UC pole vaulter to finish in the top 10 at the NCAA final. We are very excited for the upcoming outdoor season."
The Bearcats' men's and women's outdoor seasons begins next week with the Early Bird Relays on Saturday. The competition will take place at UC's Gettler Stadium and Coy Field.
