CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team fell 5-2 to BIG EAST rival No. 63 USF on Tuesday in Tampa, Fla. Freshmen Kelly Poggensee-Wei (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North) and Hannah Wille (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway Central) each picked up a singles victory for the Bearcats.
Poggensee-Wei topped Paula Montoya 6-4, 6-4 on court No. 4 for her team-leading seventh singles win of the season. Wille downed Kate Parker 6-2, 6-1 in the sixth position for her fourth win of the season. In Wille's four victories, she has lost a total of only four games.
In other singles matches, senior Jasmine Lee (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) fell 6-3, 6-0 at the top spot to Katie Vasenina, senior Caitlin O'Gara lost 6-1, 6-0 to Loreto Alonso-Martinez on court No. 2, junior Ashleigh Witte (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Fanny Fracassi in the third spot, and junior Kristina Georgieva (Varna, Bulgaria/Varna Sports School) was beat 6-0, 6-1 by Alessandra Bonte on court No. 5.
The Bulls grabbed the first point of the match after winning on two doubles courts. Lee and O'Gara lost 8-1 to Kayla Rizzolo and Danielle Mills as the top seed while Witte and junior Sierra Sullivan fell 8-2 to Vasenina and Alonso-Martinez on court No. 2. The third match between UC's Georgieva and Poggensee-Wei and USF's Francassi and Montoya was not finished.
The Bearcats will continue their Florida road trip with a match at Florida Atlantic on Thurs., March 21 at 1:30 p.m.
