WASHINGTON - The University of Cincinnati women's lacrosse team (4-3, 0-1) took an early 3-2 lead over No. 8/8 Georgetown University (6-2, 1-0) in its BIG EAST opener Friday but GU responded with 19 unanswered goals to defeat the Bearcats 21-3.
Georgetown scored the first goal of the day on a free-position shot by Hannah Franklin. Taylor Young responded for UC, scoring the Bearcats' first goal, and her 17th of the year, minutes after a Hoyas turnover and ground ball pickup by Kelsey Conway.
Sophia Thomas scored to regain the lead for GU, but a minute and a half later, UC tied the game as Megan Bell scored her 14th goal of the season on a Kylie Ramsland assist. Courtney Curtis put the ball in the cage (10th this year) a minute later to give UC the 3-2, but that would be the last time UC would see a lead.
Georgetown scored 19 unanswered goals, including 12 in the first half, to defeat the Bearcats in the BIG EAST Conference opener for both teams.
The Hoyas outshot the Bearcats 36-5 and saw 13 different players score. Bell, Curtis and Young scored one goal each, while Ramsland had two assists for UC. The Bearcats grabbed 10 ground balls to GU's 11 and forced five turnovers.
UC concludes its two-game road swing Sunday when they travel to Baltimore, Md. for a BIG EAST matchup against Loyola. Opening draw is set for 12 noon.
