CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati men's golf team completed three rounds at the Memphis Intercollegiate in Cordova, Tenn., at the Colonial Country Club. Freshman Blake Hamilton (Union, Ky./Ryle) recorded his lowest-ever finish, coming in 19th place.
"I am very proud of my team this week" said head coach Doug Martin. "We played in some cold weather conditions where the wind chill never got above 30 in rounds one and two. Now we have a little over 10 days to prepare for Mississippi, and we hope that with cooperating weather we will be able to get in some much needed short game work."
The Bearcats finished in 14th place after improving 13 strokes from round one to round three. The team finished with a score of 945 (321-316-308) to place ahead of both Arkansas State (956) and DePaul (967) in the 16-team field. Cincinnati improved its score in each of the three rounds, dropping five strokes after the first round and eight after the second round.
Individually, Hamilton led the team, placing in a tie for 19th place (80-74-74=228). The 19th place finish is the lowest career finish for the freshman.
"I am very happy for Blake Hamilton" said Martin. "This is his first top-20 finish and he showed great mental toughness this week."
Following Hamilton in the standings was sophomore Michael Wolf (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) who tied for 42nd place with a score of 234 (81-77-76). Senior David Tepe (Liberty Township/Ohio/Lakota East) tied for 62nd (78-83-78=239) while freshman Emerson Newsome (Hoschton, Ga./Mill Creek) tied for 76th place (82-82-81=245) and sophomore Jared Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) tied for 85th place (85-85-80=250).
Austin Peay State took the crown with a score of 897 (303-297-297). Louisiana-Lafayette (899), Memphis (906) and Louisville (910) rounded out the top-four teams.
Dustin Korte of Austin Peay was the individual champion with a score of 218 (71-75-72).
The Bearcats will take a short competition break before heading to the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship in West Point, Miss., on April 8 and 9.
