CINCINNATI -- The University of Cincinnati women's lacrosse team won its inaugural game at the Sheakley Athletic Center, defeating the Detroit Titans 16-6, while sporting pink uniforms in support of Katelyn Wettig's family in front of a crowd of 253. The Bearcats' 4-0 start at home continues their best home start in program history. Friday night's win snaps the Bearcats' two-game losing streak as they record their fifth win of the season, tying the most program wins since the 2010 season.
Katie Kiriazoglou scored the first goal of the night on an assist by Ashley Helmrath. Two minutes later, Detroit's Erinn Campbell tied the game, but Helmrath was able to give UC the lead again, slashing through the Titan defense for her sixth goal of the season. The Bearcats dominated the first half, going on a 6-0 scoring run after the score was tied 1-1 to take a 7-1 lead at halftime.
Taylor Young excited the crowd as she cut through the Titans backfield and netted a goal just 30 seconds into the second period, giving the Bearcats an 8-1 lead. Detroit then went on a 3-2 scoring run over 10 minutes to pull within six goals (10-4 UC).
UC ended the game on a 6-2 scoring frenzy, with goals by Helmrath, Kelsey Conway, Kiriazoglou (two goals), Ally Van Sloun and Young, to seal the 16-6 victory and remain undefeated at home.
The Bearcats defense held Detroit to six total goals and just 38 percent shooting. Freshman goalkeeper Meg Gulmi recorded six saves while UC's defense also forced 12 Titan turnovers.
Kiriazoglou, who scored four goals and recorded one assist, led the Bearcats offense. Sophomore midfielder Ashley Helmrath tied a career-high in points in a single game, and also set a career-high in points in a single game with three. Nine Bearcats scored at least one goal, while four Bearcats scored multiple goals.
Cincinnati scored in double-digits for the fifth time this season. The Bearcats' 16 goals in Friday night's win tie for seventh-best in program history for goals in a single game. As a team, the Bearcats shot .516, scoring on 16-of-31 shots.
Next up for the Bearcats is a home game against Marquette on April 5 at 7 p.m. at the Sheakley Athletics Center.
