CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati sophomore midfielder Megan Bell was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week Monday and senior attack Katie Kiriazoglou was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after their performances Friday against the University of Detroit Mercy.
In Friday's 16-6 win over the Titans, Bell had a game-high six draw controls, grabbed three ground balls and had a career-best three caused turnovers. She also scored two goals. Through nine games this season, Bell has 16 goals, 15 ground balls and has controlled 33 draws while recording a team-best 10 caused turnovers.
Kiriazoglou, who was named to the weekly honor roll, netted a game-high four goals and had one assist in Friday's win over Detroit. This is the second time in her career being named to the honor roll; the first time was last season after scoring a career-high six goals against Presbyterian on February 26, 2012.
Bell is the second UC student-athlete to receive player of the week honors this year, as goalkeeper Meg Gulmi picked up Defensive Player of the Week honors March 18. Bell's honor marks the first time in program history that two student-athletes received player of the week honors in the same season. Bell also becomes the fourth Bearcat to pick up player of the week honors.
After Friday's victory over the Titans, the Bearcats improved to 5-4 overall, marking the most program wins since the 2010 season when UC went 5-12.
UC returns to the Sheakley Athletics Center this weekend as it plays host to Marquette Friday at 7 p.m. and Notre Dame Sunday at 1 p.m.
