CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team dropped a 13-6 decision to No. 6/7 Notre Dame in a BIG EAST Conference matchup under sunny skies Sunday at the Sheakley Athletics Center.
Notre Dame (10-0, 4-0 BIG EAST) had 33 shots compared to 16 for the Bearcats (6-5, 0-3 BIG EAST) and snapped UC's two-match winning streak.
Leading 7-3 at the half, the Irish applied steady pressure in the second half, forcing UC into seven turnovers and 23 for the game. Notre Dame was 3-of-4 on free-position chances while UC was 1-for-4.
Courtney Curtis and Katie Kiriazoglou each tallied a pair of goals for the Bearcats while Megan Bell and Kylie Ramsland each had single tallies. Sarah Del Bene and Kelsey Conwaychipped in with assists.
Curtis had seven total shots with six on goal, while Kiriazoglou's pair of goals came on three shots. Ramsland finished with four draw controls and two shots to go with her goal.
Goalkeeper Meg Gulmitied a career high with 13 saves.
Notre Dame was led by four players who finished with two goals apiece, Betsy Mastropieri, Lindsay Powell, Rachel Sexton and Lauren Sullivan. Powell also added an assist.
Irish GK Ellie Hilling was one of three 'keepers to see action on the day and was in the net for the first 45:04, making four saves and getting the win.
The Bearcats trailed 7-3 at the break after jumping out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a free-position goal from Kiriazoglou at the 28:58 mark. The Irish were on the board 30 seconds later at 28:20 when Jaimie Morrison started a 3-0 run for Notre Dame which was capped by back-to-back goals from Powell at the 26:50 and 26:33, respectively.
Bell brought UC back within one at 3-2 with 20:23 remaining with an unassisted goal. ND jumped back out to a three-goal lead after tallies by Mastropieri (19:35) and Toy (15:50) made things 5-2 ahead of a score by UC's Curtis at the 12:18 mark which closed out the scoring for UC in the opening 30 minutes. Granger added a goal for the Irish at 10:52 and both offenses traded possessions for the next nine minutes before Mastropieri added her second score, closing out the scoring with a short-handed goal assisted by Powell with 52 ticks left in the first half.
Cincinnati starts a three-game road swing at Connecticut (April 12), No. 5/8 Syracuse (April 14) and Louisville (April 20) before closing out the regular season with a pair of home matches at Sheakley against Villanova (April 26) and Rutgers (April 28).
