CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati freshman Emerson Newsome (Hoschton, Ga./Mill Creek) is in first place at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship in West Point, Miss., after firing a 67-71=138 in two rounds of play on Monday, April 8.
Newsome carded career-best numbers in each round, posting a 5-under par 67 in the morning followed by a 1-under par 71 in the afternoon. He is two strokes ahead of the UAB duo of Thomas Sutton (72-68=140) and Wilson McDonald (70-70=140). Newsome attempts to win his first career tournament when he tees off in final-round action beginning at 10:06 a.m. ET., on Tuesday.
"Emerson Newsome showed his potential today," UC head coach Doug Martin said. "He was 6-under for the day with no bogies. I am very excited to see how he handles the lead. Playing with the lead is never an easy thing in golf. I am very comfortable in saying Emerson will learn a lot about himself in the third round."
As a team the Bearcats carded a two-round total of 284-308=592 to tie for seventh place heading into the final round. UC got off to a hot start, recording a 4-under 284 during the opening round to rank second in the 17-team field heading into the afternoon's second round. The score was four strokes below the previous season low for Cincinnati.
Along with Newsome, two other UC players recorded career-best numbers during the first round. Freshman Blake Hamilton (Union, Ky./Ryle) posted a four-under 68 during the first round, five strokes below his previous career-best of 73 while sophomore Jared Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) recorded a 1-under 71, one stroke under his previous best of 72.
"I am very proud of our team and its effort in round one," Martin said. "We were 12-under par with three holes to play and leading the tournament, but couldn't finish it off. We got off to a poor start in the second round and couldn't recover."
During the second round of play, UC hit a 308 to fall into a tie for seventh place with Mississippi.
Howard ranks second among the Bearcats at 71-75=146 to tie for 16th place. Hamilton is tied for 46th at 68-65=153. Senior David Tepe (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) is tied for 60th (79-77=156) while sophomore Michael Wolf (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) finished the day tied for 75th (78-86=164).
Mississippi State, ranked No. 27 in the GolfWeek rakings, sits atop the leaderboard with a one-under-par 287-288=575. UAB ranks right behind the Rebels with an even-par 286-290=576.
