CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati men’s golf team travels to Orlando, Fla., on Fri., April 26 to compete at the BIG EAST Championship at the Reunion Resort (par 72, 7,089 yards). The three-day, 54-hole event will run from April 28-30.
A total of 12 teams will compete at the championship, including Cincinnati, Connecticut, DePaul, Georgetown, Louisville, Marquette, Notre Dame, Rutgers, St. John’s, Seton Hall, USF and Villanova.
Representing the Bearcats will be senior David Tepe (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East), freshman Emerson Newsome (Hoschton, Ga./Mill Creek), sophomore Jared Howard (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome), freshman Blake Hamilton (Union, Ky./Ryle) and sophomore Michael Wolf (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller).
Newsome carded a career-best 210 at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship on April 8 to take medalist honors. He was subsequently named the BIG EAST Player of the Week for his efforts, the first conference honor of the season for Cincinnati.
The Bearcats registered their best team finish of the season, taking fifth place in the 14-team field at the Old Waverly tournament. The team scored an 8-over par 284-308-296=888.
“I am very excited to see how this team performs” said head coach Doug Martin. “We are coming off our best performance of the season at the Old Waverly and we have had two great weeks of preparation, so I expect everyone to be comfortable with their games. It now comes down to the ability to execute our plan.”
Newsome leads the Bearcats with a 75.5 strokes/round average through 25 rounds of golf in 2012-13. Tepe and Hamilton are both averaging 76.8 strokes this season while Howard averages 77.3 and Wolf averages 78.
Cincinnati finished last year’s BIG EAST Championship in 12th place after shooting a 313-305-309=927.
