CINCINNATI- The University of Cincinnati women's lacrosse team fell to the Villanova Wildcats 17-7 on Friday afternoon at the Sheakley Athletics Center.
The Wildcats (6-9, 1-6) took a three-goal lead into halftime and used two second-half runs of 6-1 and 4-1 to put the Bearcats (6-9, 0-7) away.
Taylor Young opened the scoring for the Bearcats, scoring the game's first goal on a free position shot nearly three minutes into the contest. UC held a one-goal lead for nearly seven minutes until Maria Bowman knotted the game at one goal apiece. Bowman would score her second of three goals eight minutes later to put the Wildcats up by a score. The Bearcats' Kylie Ramsland would score less than one minute later for the Bearcats to tie up the contest at two.
Following Ramsland's tying goal, the Wildcats would score four out of the next five to give Villanova a 6-3 lead at the break. Despite the halftime deficit, the Bearcats had five first half saves to the Wildcats one, and UC converted on their only free position shot.
The Wildcats started the second half with a 6-1 scoring run to keep the Bearcats at bay and put the game out of reach. UC's Young answered Villanova's first three second-half goals with her second goal of the match. After three more Wildcat goals, including two man-up goals by Shannon Lane, the Bearcats answered with a goal from Marissa Pierson, on an assist from Katie Kiriazoglou. Pierson's goal was followed by a goal from Kiriazoglou herself, on an assist from Ramsland. Ramsland would tally her second goal of the game but not before the Wildcats could put three more on the board.
Meg Gulmi notched 15 saves in goal, just off her career-best mark of 16 stops. The Bearcats were 1-1 on free position shots in the match. Ramsland and Young both had two goals each, while Kiriazoglou, Pierson, and Meg Bell each scored once.
The Bearcats wrap up the 2013 season on Sunday, April 28 against Rutgers at the Sheakley Athletics Center. UC's six seniors will be recognized prior to the start of Sunday's game.
