CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team could not manage to get things going offensively and fell to seventh-ranked Saint Louis, 4-0, in its home opener at Gettler Stadium. The loss in the Bearcat Soccer Classic drops the Bearcats to 0-3, while Saint Louis improves to 2-0.
SLU got its first goal in the 18th minute when Julian Gieseke headed in a corner from David Graydon. The lead became 2-0 four minutes later when Graydon drilled in a free kick from just inside the corner. The Billikens took a 3-0 advantage into the half after Adnan Gabeljic won the ball at midfield and surprised UC keeper Taylor Hafling (Louisville, Ky./Male/New Mexico).
UC settled down quite a bit int he second half, generating five shots in the second period including the two best scoring opportunities on a John Manga (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) that went just wide and a shot on goal by Christian Myton (Vandalia, Ohio/Chaminade Julienne).
Hafling played the first half, allowing three goals and making three saves. Alex Gill (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) played the second half and made three saves while allowing one goal.
SLU outshot the Bearcats, 17-8. The Billikens also took 12 corner kicks in the match. SLU keeper Nick Shackelford improved to 2-0 on the young season, recording the shutout.
UC will look to get on the winning side when the Bearcat Soccer Classic continues on Sunday, September 8. The Bearcats will face Evansville at 2:30 p.m. following a Noon showdown between Saint Louis and Northern Illinois.
In game one of the Classic, Evansville defeated NIU, 3-2, in overtime. The teams combined for four goals in the first 27 minutes before playing the rest of regulation scoreless. Faik Hajderovic scored the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute.
