The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team held on to a 2-1 lead Sunday afternoon to defeat Kent State and remain undefeated at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats received goals from Emily Elsbrock and Mackenzie Reynolds.
From the opening whistle, the Bearcats played fierce and controlled the tempo of the match. Kent State's defense held UC scoreless for most of the half, but late in the first half the Bearcats found the back of the net.
In the 34th minute, UC got on the board as freshman Bailey Wilson slipped a through ball behind the defense to Elsbrock. The senior then went one-on-one with the keeper and slotted the ball in the lower left corner to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats would carry the one-goal lead into halftime, but once the second half began, it didn't take long for UC to make it 2-0.
A pair of sophomore transfers connected in the 49th minute as Danielle Rotheram streaked down the right sideline and crossed a pass into the box. Waiting for the pass was Reynolds, who headed home the eventual game-winning goal.
Redshirt freshman Natalie Smith recorded three saves to garner her first career win and improve the Bearcats to 2-6-0 on the year.
The two-goal lead stood until the 68th minute when Kent State scored on a corner kick.
The Golden Flashes continued to press the remainder of the match, but the Bearcats defense held strong to claim the 2-1 victory and remain undefeated at home.
