CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to three games behind eight saves from goalkeeper Alex Gillas they played Northern Kentucky to a 1-1 draw. The Bearcats now stand at 2-3-1 on the year, while the Norse are now 2-2-2.
UC was able to solve what had plagued them in defeats earlier on the year, slow starts. After not allowing an NKU shot over the first 14 minutes, the Bearcats took a 1-0 lead on a free kick by Ashani Walker (Kingston, Jamaica/Jamaica College). After Brad Miguel(High Wycombe, England/Amersham & Wycombe College) drew a foul just outside the box, Walker took the free kick and sent it off the near post, careening into the back of the net on the far side. It marked the third-straight game with a goal for the Jamaican.
After that, Gill (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) became a steadying force for UC. The redshirt freshman made three saves in each half before NKU scored the equalizer in the 76th minute. Caleb Eastham took a play in from Nick McGregor and found himself alone from about four yards out. He then beat Gill to the far side to tie the match.
Both Gill and his Norse counterpart, A.J. Fleak, made a pair of saves in extra time to force the game to end in a draw. Since Gill assumed the starting position three games ago, UC has given up just a pair of goals. He now holds a save percentage of .870 and a goals against average of 0.80.
For the match, UC held a 14-13 advantage on shots, however the Norse were able to put nine of their 13 attempts on goal, while the Bearcats placed just three on net.
Hylton Dayes' squad will look to extend its unbeaten streak on Saturday, Sept. 21, when they host Memphis at Gettler Stadium. The American Athletic Conference opener is set for 7:00 p.m.
